(1690, William Riddell; re-erected 1872)

This originally came from the Old College in High Street and in its present location it was used to link Professors` Square with the Main Buildings. However, with the building of the War Memorial Chapel the staircase`s upper level was turned through 180 degrees. The staircase is guarded by stone sculptures of the two beasts, hence the name. The door at the top of the stairs leads into the Fore Hall.

This article is based on the guidebook "The Glasgow Guide".

The sculpted lion and unicorn can be seen at the top of the first flight of stairs; they are on the right and left hand side respectively.
