The People`s Palace was originally conceived as a museum for everyone in the city, rather than for the select few who frequented the public galleries in the West End, and it is no accident that it is situated here to ensure that the East End had at least one of the city`s important museums on its doorstep. At the time of its construction, great changes were taking place in the city and lots of important artefacts from old buildings were rescued and put on display, though it was not until 1940 that it became the home of the main collection of memorabilia from Old Glasgow. The Palace is essentially a museum of Glasgow and it traces the history and social life of the city over the last few hundred years. This article is based on the guidebook "The Glasgow Guide". More
